ATLANTA—Senior two-time All-OAC outside hitter Venessa Haase (Miamisburg) was named to the all-tournament team at the Emory (Ga.) Invitational today after posting 32 kills, four service aces, 61 digs and six total blocks over the two-day and four-match tournament.
The Berg defeated Washington & Lee (Va.) University, 3-1 (25-14, 23-25, 25-17, 25-22), but was swept by Lee (Tenn.) University (25-19, 25-19, 27-25) on Friday. The team fell to No. 12 Juniata (Pa.) College, 3-2 (25-23, 16-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-12), and No. 2 Emory University, 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-17), today.
Both Juniata and Emory advanced to the 2010 NCAA Volleyball Final Four last season.
Friday night’s lost to Lee snapped the team’s 22-match winning streak. Heidelberg leaves Atlanta 29-5 overall (9-0 Ohio Athletic Conference) and will return to Tiffin to host a quarterfinal match of the 2011 OAC Volleyball Tournament.
In addition to Haase, junior second-team All-OAC outside hitter Marian Bevington (Celina/Parkway) led both the offense and defense with 43 kills and 17 total blocks at the tournament. Sophomore middle hitter Amber Welfle (Norwalk/St. Paul) notched 33 kills of her own.
Junior Rachel Ferguson (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) set the offense up for a team-high 77 assists and sophomore Alexa Frank (Tiffin/Calvert) added 46 assists of her own.
In addition to Bevington on defense, freshman libero Tessa Benanzer (Fort Loramie) recorded 77 digs, while Haase had 61 and senior reigning OAC player of the year Jackie Reinhart (New Riegel) had 55.
The Tri-Color returns to Tiffin to host Muskingum University (12-14, 2-7 OAC) on Tuesday, Nov. 1 in an OAC quarterfinal match-up. If Heidelberg wins Tuesday, it will have home court advantage for the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 4.
