No. 6 'Berg Volleyball Sweeps John Carroll, Runs Win Streak to 16

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio—The No. 6 Heidelberg University volleyball team extended its winning streak to 16 consecutive matches tonight by sweeping John Carroll University, 25-10, 25-17, 25-19, in an Ohio Athletic Conference match at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center in University Heights, Ohio. A total of 17 student-athletes saw action for the Berg.

The Berg moves to 24-2 overall and 7-0 in the OAC and has now won 19 consecutive matches against conference opponents dating back to last season and 48 of its last 52 sets. Its only losses of the season have come against then-No. 3 Wittenberg University and defending national champion and top-ranked Calvin (Mich.) College. The Blue Streaks fall to 9-15 overall and 0-6 in the OAC.

Junior second-team All-OAC outside hitter Marian Bevington (Celina/Parkway) led the offensive attack with a match-high 11 kills and was set up predominantly by junior setter Rachel Ferguson (Brighton, Mich./Brighton), who had a match-high 16 of Heidelberg’s 33 assists.

As a team, the Berg totaled 40 kills against just nine errors in 83 attacks for a .373 hitting percentage.

Freshman setter Stephanie Romie (Anna), playing in her just her 22nd and 23rd sets of the season, served three aces.

Defensively, freshman libero Tessa Benanzer (Fort Loramie) notched a match-high 11 digs and Bevington blocked four Blue Streak attacks. John Carroll was held to a .049 hitting percentage.

The Blue Streaks were led by Sarah Slagle with five kills and Kerry Fox with 11 assists on offense, and Emily Bendzak and Gina Catania on defense with seven digs each.

Heidelberg will next travel to Marietta where it will play three matches in two days when it takes on Marietta College in an OAC match on Friday, Oct. 21, and faces Thiel (Pa.) College and Pitt – Bradford on Saturday, Oct. 22.
