No. 6 'Berg Volleyball Beats Mount Union, Maintains Sole Possession of First Place in OAC

TIFFIN, Ohio—Three student-athletes tallied 10 or more kills and three more had 20 or more digs to lead the No. 6 Heidelberg University volleyball passed the University of Mount Union tonight, 3-1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-18, 25-22), in an Ohio Athletic Conference match at Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin, Ohio. The win keeps the Berg in sole possession of first place atop the league standings.

The win improves the Berg to 23-2 overall and 6-0 in the OAC and extends its winning streak to 15 consecutive matches. The Purple Raiders fall to 18-6 overall and 4-1 in the OAC.

Heidelberg has won 45 of 49 sets during its 15-match win streak and has now won 18 straight matches against OAC opponents dating back to 2009.

Junior second-team All-OAC outside hitter Marian Bevington (Celina/Parkway) tallied a team-high 14 kills in 27 attacks and hit .407 to lead the Berg offense. Junior right side hitter Jacki Street (Grafton/Midview) added 12 kills of her own and sophomore middle hitter Amber Welfle (Norwalk/St. Paul) notched 11.

Junior setter Rachel Ferguson (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) and sophomore setter Alexa Frank (Tiffin/Calvert) combined to assist 46 of the team’s 56 kills. Ferguson recorded 30 helpers, while Frank had 16.

Freshman libero Tessa Benanzer (Fort Loramie) racked up a team-high 24 digs to pace the defense. Senior second-team All-OAC outside hitter outside hitter Venessa Haase (Miamisburg), who also etched eight kills, and senior reigning OAC player of the year Jackie Reinhart (New Riegel), who had seven slams of her own, each totaled 23 digs.

The Tri-Color returns to the court Tuesday, Oct. 18 when it travels to University Heights to face John Carroll University in an OAC match at 7 p.m.
