TIFFIN, Ohio—Hours after receiving a season-high No. 6 ranking by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, senior second-team All-OAC outside hitter outside hitter Venessa Haase (Miamisburg) recorded her second straight double-double to lead the Heidelberg University volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-12, 25-23) victory over Ohio Athletic Conference foe Baldwin-Wallace College in a conference match at Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, Ohio. Haase had a team-high-tying 12 kills to go with 11 digs.
Heidelberg improves to 22-2 overall and 5-0 in the OAC, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 13-11 overall and 1-3 in the OAC.
The Berg has also won 42 of its last 45 sets.
In addition to Haase, junior second-team All-OAC outside hitter Marian Bevington (Celina/Parkway) helped lead the offense with 12 kills. Junior setter Rachel Ferguson (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) tallied a team-high 30 assists, while sophomore setter Alexa Frank (Tiffin/Calvert) added 14 helpers of her own.
Defensively, freshman libero Tessa Benanzer (Fort Loramie) recorded a match-high 21 digs. Senior reigning OAC player of the year Jackie Reinhart (New Riegel) had 14 digs. At the net, Bevington and sophomore middle hitter Amber Welfle (Norwalk/St. Paul) blocked a total of four attacks.
Welfle had a well-rounded outing, also recording eight kills, nine digs and a match-high three service aces.
Baldwin-Wallace was guided offensively by Amanda Sawicki with 14 kills and Natalie Emmons with 10 digs on defense.
The Berg next plays Saturday, Oct. 15 when it hosts the University of Mount Union (18-5, 4-0 OAC), which will be looking to force a tie for first place in the league, in an OAC match at Seiberling Gymnasium at 7 p.m. The match will be designated as a ‘Berg Pride Event.
