TIFFIN - Heidelberg University softball catcher Mikaela Mitsch (McHenry, IL) belted two home runs on Sunday but a pesky Case Western Reserve team swept a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday, 6-4 and 11-6.
Case scored in the top of the first inning of game one. Leadoff hitter Molly O'Brien led off the game with a triple off the wall in left center. She scored on a sacrifice fly.
Heidelberg quickly answered in the bottom of the inning. Jami Wagner (New Riegel) belted a shot to left center and looked to stop at third with a triple. The Spartans threw the ball away which allowed Wagner to tie the game.
After Case regained the lead with a single run in the second, Heidelberg (10-12) plated three in the third. Lisa Simmons (Westerville/North) doubled to score pinch runner Brittany Yost (Castalia/Margaretta) to tie the game. Mitsch's fourth bomb of the year put The Berg on top 4-2.
The Spartans closed the gap with a run in the fourth to make the score 4-3.
Trailing by a run and down to their final out, the Spartans rallied for three runs to regain the lead.
Heidelberg was unable to respond in the home half of the seventh.
In the second game, Heidelberg scored twice in the opening frame without the aid of a base hit. A pair of walks and a passed ball put runners on the corners with two outs. Bri Sinden (New Philadelphia) hit a grounder to third, but the first baseman couldn’t handle the throw, which allowed two runs to score.
The Spartans answered with a two-out double and a two-out triple to cut the ‘Berg lead to 2-1 in the second.
They would tie the game in the third with a pair of singles and groundouts.
The Spartans unknotted the game with a pair of runs in the fifth. An infield error allowed two runners to score.
In the sixth, Mitsch blasted a three-run shot to left to put Heidelberg back on top.
For the second straight game, however, the Spartans would not back down. Down to their final strike with the bases loaded, Case regained the lead with a double to right field that plated two.
Down 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh, Simmons walked and moved to second on a groundout by Marissa Smego (Parma/Trinity). Case elected to intentionally walk Mitsch to face Sinden with two on and two out. Sinden, who has performed well in the clutch all season, singled off of Spartan pitcher Marisa Kohley to score Simmons to tie the game. Kayla Zachrich (Defiance/Ayersville) grounded out to short to end the inning.
In the eighth, Case scored five times off of Ali Sayre (Sylvania/Northview) to grab control of the contest.
Sayre allowed 10 runs in 5.1 innings, but only three of the runs were earned.
In their last at-bat, Heidelberg managed to draw a pair of walks, but could not score.
The Student Princes travel to Ohio Northern on Tuesday for an OAC doubleheader. Weather permitting, the first game will begin at 3 p.m.
