Tiffin, Ohio – April 2, 2011 – The Heidelberg University softball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference game with visiting Muskingum University today at Mayer Field. After losing 9-6 in game one, the Berg won the nightcap 11-3 in five innings. Heidelberg improves to 16-4 overall and 2-2 in the OAC, while the Muskies go to 7-12 and 2-2 in conference play.
In game one, down 9-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Heidelberg put its rally cap on and came out with urgency earning six runs off five hits.
Freshman Kelly Martz (Roseville, Ohio / Lakeview) and sophomore Ashley Stromack (LaGrange, Ohio / Keystone) led off with back-to-back singles. After freshman Erica Huffman (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, classmate Jami Wagner (Alvada, Ohio / New Riegel) lay down a bunt single which brought home freshman Lindsay Horwitz (Gurnee, Ill. / Warren Township) who pinch ran for Martz.
Sophomore Lauren Childs (North Kingsville, Ohio / Ashtabula Edgewood) followed with a ground out RBI which proceeded to a two-run RBI double courtesy of sophomore Bridget Moran (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood). This marked Moran’s fifth two-base hit of the season.
Later in the inning junior Bessie Artino (Bellevue, Ohio / Bellevue) blasted a two-run homerun, giving her four on the year.
In the nightcap, up 2-1 in the bottom of third, the Berg poured on five runs. Reinhart got things started batting in two off a single, which was shortly followed by a two-run RBI double off the bat of Stromack. Also earning a run batted in was Moran with a single.
After the Muskies mustered up two runs in the fifth, Heidelberg answered in the bottom half of the inning with four more to end the game in five innings. Stromack brought her total to a game-high five RBI with a two-run RBI to in the bottom of the fifth. Reinhart also hit a run in with a double, bringing her total to 10 on the year.
On the mound, junior Lexie Pinkelman (Metamora, Ohio / Evergreen) earned her team leading ninth win on the season. She pitched a complete game while giving up three runs (two earned) off four hits. She fanned three and walked the same.
