Tiffin, Ohio – March 22, 2011 – The Heidelberg University softball team, under the guidance of head coach Betsy Hada, outscored Bluffton University 23-3 in a doubleheader sweep at Mayer Field. Heidelberg improves to 10-2, while the Beavers drop to 8-6 on the year.
In game one Heidelberg, down 2-0, got on the board in the bottom of the third inning with scoring 10 runs. Sophomore Ashley Stromack (LaGrange, Ohio / Keystone) led the charge with five RBI, including two home runs with one being a grand slam. She now has three career homers.
Also earning an RBI in the third was sophomore Hannah Brumit (Stone Creek, Ohio / New Philadelphia), juniors Bessie Artino (Bellevue, Ohio / Bellevue) and Megan Reinhart (Tiffin, Ohio / Hopewell Loudon), while Bridget Moran (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) added two.
The Berg added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to seal the 14-2 win.
Junior Ohio Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week Dana Thoms (Amherst, Ohio / Firelands) threw her fifth complete game of the season, while earning her fourth win. She gave up two runs (one earned) off three hits, while striking out four and walking two.
In the night cap, Heidelberg scored one in the first, two in the third and three in the fourth and sixth inning en route to a 9-1 victory.
Artino got things started with an RBI double in the first and topped it with an two-run no doubt home run in the third, bringing home Moran. This marks Artino’s team-leading third homer of the year.
Bringing her total to a game-high five RBI, Artino singled home Brumit and sophomore Lauren Childs (Kingsville, Ohio / Ashtabula Edgewood) in the fourth.
Earning two RBI was freshman Erica Huffman (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville), while batting 3-for-4 at the plate. Also picking up an RBI was Moran to go along with her run scored. Brumit earned a game-high three runs.
On the mound, junior Lexie Pinkelman (Metamora, Ohio / Evergreen) earned her team-best fifth win on the season. She pitched a complete game with only giving up one earned run off five this. Pinkelman fanned six batters and walked two.
The Berg is back in action tomorrow (Mar. 23) as it travels to Defiance College for a 3:00 p.m. matchup.
