Ft. Myers, Fla. - March 16, 2010 – The Heidelberg University softball team split Wednesday’s games at the Gene Cusic Classic, dropping its first game of the season to Saint Mary’s College, 5-2, in game one followed with a 9-1 win over University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in the nightcap. Heidelberg now stands at 7-1 overall.
In game one, Heidelberg’s offense was led by Erica Huffman (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville) who went 1-for-3 with a RBI, followed by junior All-OAC Megan Reinhart (Tiffin, Ohio / Hopewell-Loudon) and freshman Jami Wagner (Alvada, Ohio / New Riegel) who both went 2-for-3 and each had a run scored and a stolen base.
On the mound, junior Lexie Pinkelman (Metamora, Ohio / Evergreen) pitched four innings and gave up five runs (two earned). She struck out two batters and walked one in her first loss of the season. Sophomore Ali Sayre (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) provided a solid performance throwing three shutout innings.
The Berg regrouped in the nightcap and scored two runs in the first, one in the fifth, and six in the sixth. The offense was led by Wagner with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate with one run scored and two stolen bases. Sophomore Hannah Brumit (Stone Creek, Ohio / New Philadelphia) followed and went 2-for-4 and two RBI.
Also making impact was sophomore Lauren Childs (Kingsville, Ohio / Ashtabula Edgewood) who finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored, a stolen base, and two sacrifice bunts. Sophomore Bridget Moran (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) added two runs scored and a stolen base.
Junior pitcher Dana Thoms (Amherst, Ohio / Firelands) earned the win, while only giving up one run (unearned), four hits, three strikeouts, and a walk. Thoms stands at 3-0 on the year.
