Ft. Myers, Fla. - March 14, 2010 – The Heidelberg University softball team extended its win streak to six games at the Gene Cusic Classic, topping Salem State University, 7-2, in the first game followed by blanking Curry College, 10-0, in the nightcap. The Berg advances to 6-0 on the year. Salem State falls to 2-4, while Curry goes to 0-4 on the season.
In game one, down by two, Heidelberg scored five runs in the fifth and two in the seventh to clinch the win. It marked the first time this season that the Berg has had to come back.
Sophomore Hannah Brumit (Stone Creek, Ohio / New Philadelphia) went 1-for-3 with one run and two RBI, while junior Bessie Artino (Bellevue, Ohio / Bellevue) went 3-for-4 with one run, one RBI, a double and home run. The home run marked Artino’s second of the season.
On the mound, junior pitcher Dana Thoms (Amherst, Ohio / Firelands) earned the complete game victory for her second win on the year. She gave up two earned runs off four hits. Thoms struck out one and walked two.
In the nightcap, junior Ohio Athletic Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week Lexie Pinkelman (Metamora, Ohio / Evergreen) earned her third win of the season, throwing three innings with four strikeouts and gave up five hits. Freshman pitcher Melissa Lovati (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview) made her collegiate debut as she earned the save. She went two innings and recorded four strikeouts and only gave up one hit.
Offensively, junior All-OAC Megan Reinhart (Tiffin, Ohio / Hopewell-Loudon) led the Berg with a 2-for-3 performance with two runs and a game-high five RBI. Reinhart also earned her first home run of the season that was described as a “bomb” by head coach Betsy Hada.
Sophomore Lauren Childs (Kingsville, Ohio / Ashtabula Edgewood) showed off her speed with three stolen bases, bringing her total to four on the day after earning one in game one. Also making an immediate impact as a first-year player was freshman Erica Huffman (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville) who went 2-for-3 and added one run scored and two RBI.
Heidelberg continues its Florida swing Wednesday with two games, facing Saint Mary’s College (Ind.) 9 a.m., followed by an 11 a.m. contest against University of Massachusetts Dartmouth both at the Cape Coral sports Complex.
