Ft. Myers, Fla. - March 12, 2010 – The Heidelberg University softball team, under the guidance of third-year head coach Betsy Hada, played disciplined with only having one error in two games as it opened its 2011 campaign today at the Gene Cusic Classic with a pair of victories. The Berg faced Newbury College and Nichols College at the Lee County Sports Complex in day one of action.
Heidelberg opened the day with an 11-1 dominant victory over Newbury, where it earned eight extra bases including four doubles and four triples.
Junior pitcher Dana Thoms (Amherst, Ohio / Firelands) earned the win with a complete game two-hitter, while only giving up one earn run and waived five batters.
Leading the way offensively was sophomore Hannah Brumit (Stone Creek, Ohio / New Philadelphia) who went 2-for-3 with three RBI, one run scored and a triple. Following was junior Bessie Artino (Bellevue, Ohio / Bellevue) who went 2-for-4 with one run scored, two RBI, and a double.
Also contributing was junior Megan Reinhart (Tiffin, Ohio / Hopewell-Loudon) who went 2-for-4 at the plate and earned an RBI, two runs scored, a double and a triple. Sophomore Bridget Moran (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) added one RBI, a double and a triple.
In game two, junior pitcher Lexie Pinkelman (Metamora, Ohio / Evergreen) earned the win in Heidelberg’s 2-0 victory over Nichols. Pinkelman had nine strikeouts and only gave up two hits in the shutout.
Sophomore Lauren Childs (Kingsville, Ohio / Ashtabula Edgewood) went 2-for-2 with one run scored and two stolen bases. Moran followed with a 2-for-4 performance including one RBI and a stolen base.
Brumit added an RBI and a stolen base, while freshman Jami Wagner (Alvada, Ohio / New Riegel) went 2-for-3 in her first collegiate start. Wagner had one run scored and two stolen bases.
