'Berg Earns a Split Versus the Quakers

Tiffin, Ohio – April 10, 2010 –The Heidelberg University softball team, under the guidance of second-year head coach Betsy Hada, split a doubleheader today against conference foe Wilmington College at Mayer Field. The Berg lost 5-0 in game one, while bouncing back in game two to win 3-1. Heidelberg has now won 10 of its last 11 meetings against Wilmington.

 

For the season the Berg boasts a 17-5 overall record, 4-2 in the OAC, while the Quakers stand at 9-11, 2-4 against league foes. 
 
In game one, Heidelberg was held hitless. The Quakers scored one run in the second, while adding four more in the seventh to push the final score 5-0. 

 

Sophomore pitcher Dana Thoms (Amherst, Ohio / Firelands) threw a complete game, giving up five runs off 10 hits and retiring four batters. Thoms goes to 9-4 on the season.

 

With Heidelberg’s victory in game two, freshman pitcher Ali Sayre (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania-Northview) stays undefeated with a 5-0 record. Sayre pitched a complete game, her fourth on the season, while giving up one earn run off six hits. She also struck out two.

 

Heidelberg did all of its scoring in the third inning. Freshman Carrie Moran (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood) bunted for a single which brought home freshman Kaitlyn Esordi (Brownstown, Mich. / Oscar A. Carlson), giving the Berg a 1-0 lead.

 

With two outs and two runners on base, sophomore Bess Artino (Bellevue, Ohio / Bellevue) cleared the bases with a single to left center, scoring Carrie Moran and freshman Bridget Moran (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood). Artino has 13 RBI on the year, which is third-best on the team.

 

Leading for the offense was Artino, who went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI. Carrie Moran Followed with a 1-for-3 performance with an RBI and a run scored.

 

Also earning a base hit for the Berg was Bridget Moran, freshman Ashley Stromack (LaGrange, Ohio / Keystone) and sophomore Megan Reinhart (Tiffin, Ohio / Hopewell-Loudon).

 

The Berg is back on the diamond, Wednesday, April  14, when it hosts Ohio Northern University at 3:30 p.m.
