March 7, 2010 – Ft. Myers, Fla. - The Heidelberg University softball team continued play at the Gene Cusic Classic with two more victories. The Berg faced Rockford College and Anna Maria College at the Cape Coral Sports Complex in day two of its spring trip.
Heidelberg is now 4-0 on the year and it has a lot to do with the team’s attitude. “The girls have a mentality this year that they are expecting to win,” said head coach Betsy Hada. “Our team is confident in what we bring to the table and we look to continue to build on this momentum.”
The Berg opened the day with an 8-0 win over Rockford.
Sophomore Briana Hinz ( Madison, Ohio / Madison) earned her second win on the season. Hinz gave up only three hits and retired five.
Leading the way offensively was freshman Hannah Brumit (Stone Creek, Ohio / New Philadelphia). Brumit went 2-3, including three runs scored. Sophomore Bessie Artino (Bellevue, Ohio / Bellevue) contributed with a 2-4 outing and scored a run.
In game two, the Berg was triumphant over Anna Maria College with a score of 12-3 in five innings, which included eight runs scored in the first inning.
Sophomore Dana Thoms (Amherst, Ohio / Firelands) pitched her second win on the season with three strikeouts.
At the plate, it was a team effort which included four players scoring two runs apiece. Freshman Bridget Moran (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood), Carrie Moran (Lakewood, Ohio / Lakewood), and Paige Diers (New Richmond, Ohio / New Richmond) each had two runs scored, while Artino also scored a pair of runs.
Brumit and Natalie Hunt (Maineville, Ohio / Maineville) also earned a run scored.
Senior Andrea Gerdeman (Ottawa, Ohio / Ottawa-Glandorf) went 1-3 with a homerun and two RBIs.
