The Yellow Jackets of Defiance College swept the Heidelberg University softball team in their final doubleheader of the 2013 season. The Student Princes (12-24, 2-16 OAC) were run ruled in the first contest, 10-0, while Defiance took the second game by one run, 3-2.
The Yellow Jackets scored ten runs in the first inning of game one and shutout the Berg to take the first contest in five innings.
The Berg took the lead in game two in the top of the third when Paige Atterholt (DeGraff/Riverside) was hit by a pitch from Defiance pitcher Lauren Dicke. With two outs, freshman Kayla Zachrich (Defiance/Ayersville) smacked a double to centerfield, scoring Atterholt. After a Marissa Smego (Parma/Trinity) walk, Nicola Gabriele (Boardman) singled into left field scoring Zachrich.
The Yellow Jackets brought the deficit to one with one run in the bottom of the third. Defiance added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to lead 3-2 heading into the later innings.
The Heidelberg ladies will bid farewell to only one senior this year, lefty, powerhouse Ali Sayre. Fifth year head coach Betsy Hada maintains 13 freshmen that have gained valuable experience heading into the offseason.
