The Heidelberg University softball team traveled to Otterbein University to battle the Cardinals in Ohio Athletic Conference action. The Student Princes (11-21, 1-15 OAC) dropped the first game to the Cardinals, 6-1 and were ahead of the Cardinals in the second game, but allowed three unanswered runs to lose, 4-3 in nine innings.
The first contest remained scoreless until the Otterbein half of the fifth, when the Cardinals dropped three runs on the Berg followed by three more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
The lone Berg run of the game came from the bat of freshman second baseman Lisa Simmons (Westerville/Westerville North) when she drove in pinch runner, Brittany Yost (Castalia/Magaretta), from third in the top of the seventh.
The second game needed extra innings to decide a winner but it was the Cardinals winning in dramatic fashion.
Junior Lydia Stover (Morris City, Il./Olney Central College) led off the Heidelberg third with a walk followed by a strikeout by Jordan Crase (Bucyrus/Colonial-Crawford) and a single to left field from junior, centerfielder Jami Wagner (Alvada/New Riegel). Simmons banged an RBI double to left field scoring Stover before the Cardinals defense escaped the inning.
After Otterbein answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the third, freshman catcher Bri Sinden (New Philadelphia) led of the fourth with a single up the middle. Sinden was gunned out at second when Jessica Lieberth (Aurora) reached first on a fielder’s choice. After a single from Kayla Zachrich (Defiance/Ayersville), Lieberth scored on a throwing error following a fielder’s choice by Andi Lowe (Westerville/Westerville Central).
A Stover single to left field scored Zachrich from second before the Cardinals collected two infield putouts, ending the inning.
Freshman Carly Pickard (Johnstown/Johnstown-Monroe), who came on in relief of freshman starter Paige Atterholt (DeGraff/Riverside) in the third, kept the Cardinal bats silent in the bottom of the third. However, the Cardinals scored one run in the fifth and another in the sixth to send the game into extra innings.
Otterbein scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth on a wild pitch from freshman pitcher, Nicola Gabriele (Boardman).
The Berg ladies will battle the Yellow Jackets of Defiance College on Thursday, April 25 in Defiance, Ohio. The contest was originally scheduled for March 20, but the matchup has been rescheduled twice. First pitch in the double header is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
