The Heidelberg University softball team matched up with the University of Mount Union on Sunday, April 21 after being postponed on Saturday.
The Student Prince (11-19, 1-13 OAC) fell behind in the early innings of both game one and two to drop their OAC doubleheader to the Purple Raiders, 6-0 and 6-2.
Jami Wagner (Alvada/New Riegel) led the Berg at the plate on the first game, hitting 3 of 4 with two bunts and an infield single.
Fifth year head coach Betsy Hada gave freshman, righty Nicola Gabriele (Boardman) the starting nod in game one. Gabriele surrendered six runs on seven hit in six full innings of work.
Mount Union’s starter, Rachel McAninch held the Student Princes to four hits as the senior threw a complete game shutout with ten strikeouts.
The Purple Raiders took an early lead with two runs in the first inning followed by another in the bottom of the second. Mount Union dropped three more runs on the Student Princes in the fourth to cruise, 6-0.
The Berg fell behind in game two, 2-0 in the first inning but picked up their first run of the afternoon in the top of the third. Wagner led off the inning with a single to left field then advanced to second when freshman second baseman Lisa Simmons (Westerville/Westerville North) laid down a sacrifice bunt.
Freshman first baseman Marissa Smego (Parma/Trinity) struck out on the ensuing at-bat before freshman catcher Bri Sinden (New Philadelphia) smacked an infield single scoring Wagner from second.
Mount Union earned two more runs in the bottom of the third and fourth to extend their lead to 5-1.
The Berg collected their last run of the second game in the top of the sixth inning when Siden led off the inning with a single, which she stretched into a triple. Kayla Zachrich (Defiance/Ayersville) hit a triple the center field, scoring Sinden from third.
The Purple Raiders added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning to take game two, 6-2.
The Heidelberg ladies will return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 23 when they travel to Otterbein Univeristy. Action from Westerville, Ohio between the Student Princes and the Cardinals is slated for 3:00 p.m.
