Softball Opens OAC Play Saturday at Capital and Hosts Wittenberg Sunday

TIFFIN, Ohio—The Heidelberg University softball team opens Ohio Athletic Conference play Saturday, March 24 when it faces Capital University in a doubleheader at Clowson Field in Bexley, Ohio. Game time for the first contest is slated for 1 p.m. Heidelberg will have a short turnaround before hosting Wittenberg University in a non-conference doubleheader Sunday, March 25 at Hedges Boyer Park in Tiffin at 2 p.m.

The Berg (9-2) enters this weekend’s games winners of three straight games and six of their last seven following a sweep Wednesday against Defiance College in team’s home opener. Six starters are hitting above .300, including four who are at or near the .350 mark.

Senior first baseman Bessie Artino (Bellevue) is tearing at a .419 (18-for-43) clip with 13 runs batted in, 11 runs scored and a .990 on-base-plus-slugging percentage. Sophomore second baseman Erica Huffman (Strongsville) is hitting .405 (17-for-42) with eight RBI, six runs and a .432 on-base percentage. Sophomore outfielder Julie Okorn (Euclid) is batting .357 (10-for-28) with four RBI and eight runs. Sophomore infielder/catcher Kelly Martz (Roseville, Mich./Lakeview) is hitting .349 with a team-high 15 RBI and nine runs.

On the mound, senior righty Lexie Pinkelman (Metamora/Evergreen) is 3-0 in five appearances, including four starts, with a 0.70 earned run average and 23 strikeouts against only eight walks over 25.2 innings. Pinkelman has also recorded three complete games, including one shutout. Junior left handed pitcher Ali Sayre (Sylvania/Northview) is 3-2 in five appearances, including three starts, with a 0.66 ERA and 19 strikeouts against just two walks in 27.1 innings. She has also recorded a pair of complete games and one shutout.

Capital (9-5) is currently riding a four-game winning streak following a sweep Thursday against Denison University. Devan Boggs is tearing at .457 (21-for-46) with three home runs, 13 RBI, 15 runs scored and a 1.310 on-base-plus slugging percentage. Nicole George is hitting .400 (12-for-30) with five homers, 13 RBI, 13 runs scored and a 1.548 OPS. Courtney Dingess is batting .385 (10-for-26) with four RBI and four runs. Lexi Majoy is hitting .359 (14-for-39) with two long balls, 11 RBI, seven runs and a 1.055 OPS.

Alyssa Patznick anchors the pitching staff. Patznick is 6-0 in 11 appearances, including six starts, with a 4.17 ERA and 39 strikeouts over 49.2 innings pitcher. She has also recorded five complete games and one shutout.

Wittenberg (11-7) has won four of its last seven games following a doubleheader split Thursday against Otterbein University. Tori Amicon leads the offense with a .368 (21-for-57) batting average with 13 RBI and 17 runs scored, matching a team high. Jessica Snyder is pacing at a .350 (21-for-60) clip with one home run, six RBI and 17 runs. Laura Rose is batting .345 (20-for-58) and matches Amicon with 13 RBI and 17 runs.

Rachel Ross has anchored the pitching staff, going 5-3 in eight starts with a 4.20 ERA and 46 strikeouts over 49.1 innings. She has hurled five complete games and two shutouts.

Following Sunday’s doubleheader, the Berg will travel to Bluffton University on Tuesday, March 27 for non-conference doubleheader.
