CLERMONT, Fla.—The Heidelberg University softball team took a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning Sunday against Bethany (W.Va.) College before a deluge of rain halted play and resumed action today, cruising to a 9-2 victory at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. The win moves the Berg to 4-1.
A costly Bethany error in the top of the first inning led to three ‘Berg runs and two more tallies in the fourth moved the Tri-Color to a 5-0 lead when play was stopped.
When play resumed this morning, a two-out error allowed Bethany to tally a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth.
In the seventh, the Berg loaded the bases for sophomore center fielder Jamie Wagner (Alvada/New Riegel), who drove in sophomore left fielder Julie Okorn (Euclid) and sophomore flex player Melissa Lovati (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview) by reaching base on an error.
Okorn led the 10-hit attack by going 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of runs scored. Sophomore second baseman Erica Huffman (Strongsville) was 2-for-3. Senior right handed pitcher Lexie Pinkelman (Metamora/Evergreen) and freshman flex player Ashley Kessler (North Olmsted) each drove in two runs.
Pinkelman worked all seven innings on the mound, allowing two runs (none earned) on five hits while fanning seven batters and walking four to improve to 2-0.
The Berg returns to the diamond tomorrow 9 a.m. game against Lesley (Mass.) College and an 11 a.m. contest against Fairliegh Dickinson (N.J.) University.
