Bexley, Ohio – January 29, 2011 – The Heidelberg University men’s and women’s track and field teams, under the guidance of first-year head coach Briana Shook, participated in the Ohio Athletic Conference Relays today at the Capital Center. The event was hosted by Capital University.
As a team, the women earned a fifth-place finish (50.5 pts.), while the men finished 10th (29 pts.).
On the men’s side senior Frank Medina (Wakeman, Ohio / Western Reserve) and junior Joe Yoder (West Liberty, Ohio / West Liberty Salem) made an impact in the field events with a seventh place finish in shot put, with throws of 44'8.0" and 36'2.0", respectively.
Yoder and senior Jordan Alvarez (Sherwood, Ohio / Fairview) tied for second in high jump, with leaps of 6'5.50" and 5'5.75", respectively.
The 4x200 meter relay, consisting of sophomore Gibril Kamara (Westerville, Ohio / Central), freshman Jamil Boldian (Chicago, Ill. / Urban Youth), freshman Tyler Harris (Berea, Ohio / Berea), and sophomore Justin Burnett (Springfield, Ohio / Northwestern), placed fourth with a time of 1:34.56.
Sophomore Dustin Kuess (Coldwater, Ohio / Coldwater) (16:14.74) and junior John Gogle (Sunbury, Ohio / Big Walnut) (15:52.83) earned fifth place in the 5,000 meter run relay.
Also finishing third was the 1600-meter sprint medley foursome, which included Burnett, Boldian, Harris, and freshman John Avsec (Geneva, Ohio / Geneva), who crossed the finish line 3:45.19.
Leading the women was sophomore Marian Bevington (Celina, Ohio / Parkway), who was a part of 13.5 points for the Berg. Bevington and freshman Raichel Herte (Spencer, Ohio / Black Water) earned first in long jump with a leaps of 18’2.5” and 14'5.0", respectively. Bevington (33'10.25") and Herte (30'4.75") also took first in the triple long jump. In high jump, Bevington (4'11.75") and junior Aaliyah VanLeer (Cleveland Heights, Ohio / Cleveland Heights) (4'6.0") tied for third in high jump.
Junior Alexis Goodman (Tiffin, Ohio / Columbian) and freshman Samantha Filliater (Fostoria, Ohio / Lakota) placed fifth in the 55-meter dash with times of 7.63 and 7.99, respectively. Goodman was also part of the 1600-meter sprint medley that earned fourth place after finishing at 4:35.25. Freshman Samantha Filliater (Fostoria, Ohio / Lakota), sophomore Cori Nalbach (Massillon, Ohio / Fairless), and freshman Sophie Goobic (Canton, N.Y. / Hugh C. Williams) completed the quartet.
Also earning points in the field events for shot put was VanLeer (36'4.0") and freshman Kristina Jasinski (Litchfield, Ohio / Wellington) (33'8.0") who earned fifth-place.
