Men in 5th, Women in 9th After First Day of OAC Indoor Track & Field Championships

WESTERVILLE, Ohio—Junior Nate Davis (Dayton/Stivers) won the first individual title of the 2012 Ohio Athletic Conference Championships for Heidelberg University today to lead the Student Prince men’s and women’s indoor track & field teams in the first day of the conference championship hosted by Otterbein University at The Clement Center in Westerville, Ohio. After one day of action, the men stand in fifth place and the women in ninth.

Less than one week after finishing his junior season of men’s basketball, Davis won the long jump with a leap of 23-2.00 in his first competition of the season.

Juniors Wes Hendricks (Beavercreek) and Shondell Thomas (Westerville/South) each won the preliminary round of the 200-meter and 500-meter dashes, respectively. Hendricks timed in at 22.73, while Thomas clocked a 1:07.59. Senior Joe Yoder (West Liberty/West Liberty-Salem) also advanced past the prelims in the 500-meter dash, clocking a 1:08.11.

Hendricks also came in second in the 400-meter dash prelims, pacing at 50.44.

In women’s action, junior Marian Bevington (Celina/Parkway) placed third among a field of 23 in the long jump with a 17-11.50 mark.

Senior Lilly Hansberger (Norwalk/Western Reserve) came in fourth in the 400-meter dash prelims in 1:02.75 and will compete in tomorrow’s finals.

The top three finishers in each event earn All-OAC status.

After one day and five scored events, the Baldwin-Wallace College men stand in first place with 34 points. B-W is trailed by the University of Mount Union (32), Ohio Northern University (30), Wilmington College (20) and John Carroll University and Heidelberg in a tie for fifth (16). Rounding out the order are Muskingum University (14), Otterbein University (13), Capital University (11) and Marietta College (nine).

The Otterbein women lead after day one with 38 points, followed by ONU (36), Capital (25), B-W (24.5) and Mount Union (19.5). Marietta (19), JCU (13), Muskingum (nine), Heidelberg (six) and Wilmington (five) round out slots 6-10.

Action resumes tomorrow in the second and final day of the championships.
