The Heidelberg University men’s soccer team with the guidance of head coach Brian Haley, began the 2012 season by dropping their first three games. But in recent weeks the Student Princes have rallied to a 4-4 record. Against St. Vincent College, five different Student Princes found the back of the net, on their way to a 5-0 victory.

Every ‘Berg player saw action on the pitch this evening in Latrobe, PA.

“Can’t be too critical of the way we played,” said Haley. “The important part is that we kept a clean sheet, but we need to continue to work and improve,” he added.

Sophomore Matthew Stevens (South Lyon, MI) recorded his second shutout of the season while tallying two stops for the Berg. Stevens has collected 22 saves this season.

Freshman Christopher Koczak (Springboro) tabbed the first goal for the Berg in the 13th minute when senior Ryan Smith (Roanoke, TX/Keller) served up an assist. Smith also tallied a goal against the Bearcats, earning his fifth goal of the season.

Tyler Eoff (Oak Harbor) netted his third goal of the season in the 24th minute, to send the Student Princes ahead, 2-0. Hamid Shariff (Columbus/Centennial) was awarded with the assist to Eoff’s goal. Shariff added a goal of his own for Heidelberg on a penalty kick in the 74th minute.

In the 38th minute, junior Sean Dunlop (Geneva) knocked in his first goal of the season.

The Heidelberg men will return to action on Wednesday, September 26, when they return to campus to battle the Wolverines of Grove City College. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
