WILMINGTON, Ohio—The Heidelberg University men’s soccer team closed the 2011 season today with a 1-0 loss to Wilmington College in an Ohio Athletic Conference match at Charlie Gilhart Field in Wilmington, Ohio. Eight Student Princes—forwards Matt Condon (Powell/Bishop Watterson) and Mike Harling (Manchester, England/Holy Cross), midfielders Dillard Anu (Westerville/South), Jeff Gordon (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) and Michael Juart (Hilliard/Darby), defenders Andrew Bertram (Medina/Cloverleaf) and Joe Trejo (Tuscon, Az./Sabino), and goalkeeper Luke Terndrup (Columbus/Bishop Ready)—made their final appearances in the Tri-Color.
Heidelberg’s season ends at 3-11-4 overall and 1-7-1 in the OAC. Wilmington improves to 11-6-1 overall and 5-4-0 in the OAC and will continue on to the upcoming OAC tournament.
A 76th minute penalty kick by Henrik Hornnaess proved to be the game-winner.
Offensively for the Berg, Juart landed all four of his shots on goal, while junior midfielder Cole Tonti (Columbus/St. Francis de Sales) placed two of his three shots on frame.
In goal, junior two-time All-OAC keeper Ryan Smith (Roanoke/Texas) made six saves in 90 minutes to finish the season with 81. His 21 goals allowed in 1,535 total minutes leaves him with a 1.23 goals against average for 2011.
Anton Niklasson made seven saves in 90 minutes for Wilmington.
The Quakers outshot the Berg, 17-15, and held an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Despite the loss of eight seniors following Saturday’s match, 23rd-year head coach Brian Haley will look forward to the return of 14 freshmen and sophomores for 2012.
