WILMINGTON, Ohio—The Heidelberg University men’s soccer team lost a tough 2-1 match to Allegheny (Pa.) College in overtime tonight at the Wilmington Kiwanis Classic at Charlie Gilhart Field in Wilmington, Ohio. The match was the third straight overtime outing to start the season for the Student Princes.
Heidelberg falls to 0-2-1, while Allegheny improves to 4-0.
In the 71st minute, sophomore defender Erik Furst (Columbus/Upper Arlington) found freshman midfielder Shariff Hamid (Centennial) with a pass from midfield and Hamid found the back of the net for his first goal of the season to give the Student Princes a 1-0 lead. The assist was Furst’s team-leading second of the season.
Allegheny’s Chris Brennan tied the game, 1-1, in the 77th minute, and an offensive stalemate over the remaining 13 minutes sent the Berg into its third overtime game of the season in as many tries.
The game ended when David del Greco scored just 1:05 into the overtime period.
In goal, junior second-team All-OAC goaltender Ryan Smith (Roanoke, Texas/Keller) made four saves and now has 15 for the season.
Despite a close match, Allegheny led in shots, 13-9, and out-cornered Heidelberg, 7-2.
The Student Princes will play their second and final match of the Wilmington Kiwanis Classic when they face St. Vincent (Pa.) College at 5 p.m.
