TIFFIN, Ohio—The Heidelberg University men’s soccer team tied Defiance College tonight, 1-1, in its first midweek match at Mayer Field in Tiffin. It was the Student Princes’ second consecutive double overtime game.
After two matches, the Berg stands 0-1-1. Defiance is 1-1-1.¬
After a deadlocked first half, senior three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Mike Harling (Manchester, England/Holy Cross) broke a scoreless game in the 64th minute when he received a right-side cross from sophomore defender Erik Furst (Columbus/Upper Arlington) and netted his first goal of the season.
Jaiden Henderson knotted the score, 1-1, in the 69th minute with a goal from 18 feet out.
Junior second-team All-OAC goaltender Ryan Smith (Roanoke, Texas/Keller) logged all 110 minutes and made one save.
The Student Princes led in shots, 22-9. Each team tallied four corner kicks.
After opening the season with two home matches, Heidelberg will go on a four-game stretch away from Tiffin. The Student Princes will play Friday-Saturday, Sept. 9-10 at the Wilmington Kiwanis Classic with games against Alleghany (Pa.) College at 5 p.m. on Friday and St. Vincent (Pa.) College at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
The Berg does not play another home match until Sept. 21 against Oberlin College.
