'Berg Advances to the Finals with 1-0 Win

Tiffin, Ohio – November 4, 2010 - For the third time in school’s history, the Heidelberg University men’s soccer team advances to the OAC Tournament finals as it topped John Carroll University 1-0 in the semifinals under the lights of Mayer Field. This marks the ‘Berg’s first time back in the finals since 1999.

Heidelberg, under the guidance of head coach Brian Haley,  improves to 14-3-2 overall, while the Blue Streaks finish its 2010 season with a record of 11-9-1. The Berg will host Ohio Northern University on Saturday for the OAC Tournament crown.

Sophomore Grant Beck (Roanoke, Texas / Keller) scored the game winner in the 21st minute of the first half after receiving a well-executed cross from senior OAC Player of the Week Cory Buhrman (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) from the near side of the field.

John Carroll almost had the equalizer late in the second half when Corey Rider made a break away and just missed the lower far post.

Offensively, senior Gavin McCarthy (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Darby) and Beck led the team with two shots on goal. Also recording a shot on goal were juniors Mike Harling (Manchester, New England / Holy Cross) and Michael Juart (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Darby).

Heidelberg’s All-OAC sophomore Ryan Smith (Roanoke, Texas / Keller) gathered in two saves on the night.
