Westerville, Ohio – October 6, 2010 – After a red card at the 20th minute mark, the Heidelberg University men’s soccer team played with 10 men for the rest of the game and stay undefeated in the Ohio Athletic Conference with a 1-0 win over Otterbein University.
The Berg improves to 8-3 overall, 2-0 in the OAC, while the Cardinals drop to 1-10, 0-2 in the conference.
Heidelberg’s junior Mike Harling (Manchester, New England / Holy Cross) scored the game winner in the 49th minute of the game. Senior OAC Player of the Week senior Cory Buhrman (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) set up the play as he centered the pass from the right base line.
This marks Harling’s third goal and Buhrman’s team-leading 11th point of the season.
“We got the goal in the second half, reasonably early and defended very well,” head coach Brian Haley said. “It wasn’t a beautiful game. It was a win we dug out and one that we’re proud of.”
Despite Otterbein having the 9-8 shot advantage, Heidelberg presented solid resistance on Otterbein’s offense.
“Our defense in the second half was fantastic, which was led by senior Greg Acuna (Findlay, Ohio / Findlay), with keeping Otterbein off the scoreboard,” Haley said.
Goalie sophomore Mike Kenny (Rocky River, Ohio / Rocky River) had a game-high four saves.
“Kenny stepped in and played a great game. Our back four was great. Junior Jake Reinbolt (Anthony Wayne, Ohio / Whitehouse) was stellar and played like a workhorse in the midfield. Harling showed leadership and worked hard upfront,” said Haley.
“All three of captains (Acuna, Reinbolt, and Harling) played their captain role today.”
