Tiffin, Ohio – October 2, 2010 – The Heidelberg University men’s soccer team opened its Ohio Athletic Conference slate with an impressive 3-1 win over the defending OAC champions Capital University.
The Berg improves to 7-3 overall, 1-0 in the OAC, while the Crusaders drop to 7-3, 0-1 in conference play.
Junior Michael Juart (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Darby) got things started for the Berg with a score from a penalty kick in the 14th minute. It marked Juart’s second goal of the season.
Heidelberg would add another goal before half in the 36th minute off the foot of senior Cory Buhrman (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick), when sophomore Grant Beck (Roanoke, Texas / Keller) set up the play with a deep cross.
In the second half, Buhrman would add insurance for Heidelberg as he would retrieve a deflection off Capital’s goalie and would place the ball in the far post. It marked Buhrman's team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Capital managed to score in the 83rd minute, but it would not be able to overcome the deficit.
Offensively, junior Mike Harling (Manchester, New England) had a game-leading three shots on goal. Senior Gavin McCarthy (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Darby) contributed with two shots on goal, while sophomore Joel Oldham (Roanoke, Texas / Keller) recorded one on target.
Heidelberg’s sophomore goalie Ryan Smith (Roanoke, Texas / Keller) earned five stops on the day.
