Cleveland, Ohio – September 25, 2010 – A first half goal defeats the Heidelberg University men’s soccer team today at Case Western Reserve University. The Berg lost to the Spartans 1-0.
Heidelberg drops to 5-3 overall, while Case Western improves to 4-2-2 on the year.
The Spartans scored the lone goal of the game in the 32nd minute of the first half off the leg of Phil Debauche, when Rene Silva set the score up following a cross from sophomore midfielder Eric Erb.
Heidelberg had a chance with five minutes remaining in regulation, but it was denied by the Case Western’s goalie.
“Case deserved to be in front in the first half,” said head coach Brian Haley. “Heidelberg competed stronger in the second half and I felt it was more of an even game.”
Juniors Mike Harling (Manchester, New England / Holy Cross) and Jake Reinbolt (Whitehouse, Ohio / Anthony Wayne) each recorded a shot on goal.
The Berg’s sophomore goalie Ryan Smith (Roanoke, Texas / Keller) recorded a game-leading three stops.
Heidelberg looks to get back in the win column as it travels to Bluffton University, Wednesday, September 29 at 4:00 p.m.
“We have another game (referring to Bluffton) to prepare for the Ohio Athletic Conference,” Haley said. “If we find a way to be consistent, we can compete with anyone.”
The first OAC game for the Berg is defending conference champions Capital University on Saturday, October 2. The game is slated for 1:30 p.m.
