Tiffin, Ohio – September 21 – A great second half effort earns the Heidelberg University men’s soccer team a 2-1 win over Hiram College tonight under the lights at Mayer Field.
The Berg improves to 5-2, while the Terriers drop to 2-6.
In the 31st minute of play, Hiram got on the board first when Ryan Minick scored off a rebound from the post.
Despite outshooting Hiram 9-6, Heidelberg would go into halftime down 1-0.
A rejuvenated Heidelberg team came out in the second half.
At the 55 minute mark, sophomore Joel Oldham (Roanoke, Texas / Keller) made an excellent through ball in the box to sophomore Grant Beck (Raonoke, Texas / Keller) who beat a Hiram defender and placed the ball in the upper far post of the net. It marked Beck’s first goal of the season.
Two minutes later, junior Mike Harling (Manchester, New England / Holy Cross) scored a header off junior Michael Juart’s (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Darby) corner kick. It marked Harling’s second goal of the season, first game winner.
For the game, Heidelberg held a 20-10 shot advantage.
Harling had a game-leading six shots, with three on goal. Beck and Cory Buhrman (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) each had two shots on goal.
Also earning a shot on goal was Juart, senior Greg Acuna (Findlay, Ohio / Findlay), sophomore Justin James (Grapevine, Texas / Grapevine), and sophomore Cole Tonti (Columbus, Ohio / St. Francis de Sales).
Junior Jake Reinbolt (Whitehouse, Ohio / Anthony Waynge) and Jon Kijowski (Norwalk, Ohio / Norwalk) made their presence felt in the middle and back lines.
Next up for the Berg is Case Western Reserve University, Saturday, September 25 in Cleveland, Ohio. The game is slated for 2:00 p.m.
