Austintown, Ohio – November 11, 2009 - Two members of the Heidelberg University men’s soccer team were recognized with postseason accolades by the Ohio Athletic Conference. Both selections came from the defensive side of the ball. Junior defender Greg Acuna (Findlay, Ohio / Findlay) earned a spot on the All-OAC First Team, while freshman goal keeper Ryan Smith (Roanoke, Texas / Keller) was named on the All-OAC Second Team.
Acuna started in 19 games as a defender for the ‘Berg. As the anchor and leader on Heidelberg’s defense, Acuna contributed to the Berg’s eight shutouts which was fourth best in the OAC. On offense Acuna recorded three shots including two shots on goal.
Smith has already made an immediate impact as freshman while starting in every game as Heidelberg’s goal keeper. For the year Smith accumulated 88 saves, which resulted in second in the conference in goals allowed (18) and goals against averaged (.87).
Head coach Brian Haley was very pleased with these selections starting with Acuna. “It was well deserved for a player who only played 10 minutes in Greg's first year and is proof of his dedication, work ethic and focus to make himself a better player,” Haley said. “As a member of our leadership group he has shown what leadership is about through his achievements. Ryan is not only a honors students but now has OAC league recognition from coaches that he is one of the best in the University game. This is only the start for Ryan. With more development I have no doubt he will be among the best, if not the best, Heidelberg has seen and the OAC will see.”
Heidelberg concluded the season at 10-8-2 overall and 4-4-1 in the OAC. Under the guidance of 21st-year head coach Brian Haley, Heidelberg made its 12th appearance, third-straight, in the OAC Tournament which is second best only behind in John Carroll University in the OAC.
