Tiffin, Ohio – September 9, 2009 – The Heidelberg University men’s soccer team continues their momentum whiling defeating Geneva College 1-0. The Berg improves to 2-1 while the Golden Tornadoes drop to 2-2 on the year.
After a physical back and forth first half, the Berg came out with new energy in the second. In the 75th minute Joel Oldham (Roanoke, Texas / Keller) kicked a square ball at the side of the box and connected with Gavin McCarthy (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Darby) who placed the ball off the back post and in for the game-winning goal. With that goal, McCarthy has already topped his total from last year and leads the Berg with two on the season.
Heidelberg’s Cory Buhrman (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) and Dillard Anu (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville) lead the team with three shots each on the night. Goal keeper Ryan Smith (Southlake, Texas / Southlake Carroll) had a solid night with three saves for the Student Princes.
It was the Berg’s first back to back win since October 11, 2008 when they beat number seven ranked Baldwin-Wallace College (Oct. 8) and then prevailed at Wilmington College (Oct. 11). Head coach Brian Haley said it was a great win against a great team. “We beat a hardworking team with a lot of heart”, Haley said. “I’m proud to be [Heidelberg’s] coach. I believe it’s the coming of age for our team. It was a physical match with a fantastic game winner.”
The Berg looks to make it three straight wins when they host Allegheny College Saturday, September 12, at 7:00 p.m.
