Impressive Comeback Leads to 'Berg Win

Tiffin, Ohio – September 4, 2009 – The Heidelberg University men’s soccer team rallied in the second half to beat Albion College 2-1. The Berg improves to 1-1 on the season while the Britons start 0-1.

Both teams went into halftime with the score 0-0. However, no more than 30 seconds to the start of the second half, Albion’s Erick Clark snuck one past Heidelberg’s goal keeper Ryan Smith (Roanoke, Texas / Keller) to make the score 1-0, in favor of Albion.

Albion held onto the lead until Heidelberg’s Cory Buhrman (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) scored on a penalty kick to tie it up at the 82nd minute. One minute later Ryan Vowinkle (Southlake, Texas / Carroll) had a square ball at the top of the box and connected with Gavin McCarthy (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Darby) who placed the ball backside of the net for the game-winning goal.

McCarthy’s goal was his first of the 2009 campaign and he looks to carry the momentum to the next three home games. “It’s fantastic” McCarthy said. “The momentum is through the roof right now. We’re going to keep working hard and go for each win home or away.”

It was the Berg’s first win of the season. Head coach Brian Haley said it wasn’t so much that they won that was impressive, but how they won. “This win was a team effort”, Haley Said. “The players showed togetherness and determination. They showed a lot of heart by coming back.”

The Berg continues a four game home stretch when they host Geneva College Wednesday, September 9, at 7:00 p.m.
