The Heidelberg University men’s soccer team took on the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern University under the lights of Mayer Field on Tuesday, October 16.
Ohio Northern, ranked ninth in Division III by D3Soccer.com, has been outstanding in conference play; in fact they had not surrendered a goal in their last five games against OAC opponents. The Berg, winners of their last three, looked to contain the powerful Polar Bears.
Despite intense play from the Student Princes, they fell to Ohio Northern, 5-0.
Seniors Ryan Smith (Roanoke, TX/Keller) and Cole Tonti (Columbus/St. Francis de Sales) both tallied one shot for the Berg.
Freshman Ryan Homoki (Grafton/Midview) recorded a shot against the Polar Bears. Homoki has collected 20 shots in his freshman campaign.
Sophomores Nico Samaneigo (Hudson) and Hamid Shariff (Columbus/Centennial) tallied a shot on goal and a shot for the Student Princes, respectively.
Sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Stevens (South Lyon, MI) saw a borage of shots from Ohio Northern. Stevens recorded three saves, which brings his season total to 58.
With the loss, the Student Princes move to 8-6-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the OAC.
The Heidelberg men will return to the pitch on Saturday, October 20, when they travel to Muskingum. The Student Princes will battle the Muskies of Muskingum University at 7:00 pm, following the women’s game, which is slated for a 4:00 pm kickoff.
