Following their 2-2 draw with Wilmington a week ago, the Heidelberg University men’s soccer team found their first Ohio Athletic Conference win. The Berg took down the Crusaders of Capital University, 1-0.
In the 38th minute, it was the foot of freshman Christopher Koczak (Springboro) that gave the Berg the lone goal of the contest. Koczak was served with an assist from sophomore Tyler Eoff (Oak Harbor). The goal marks Koczak’s fourth and Eoff’s first assist of the season. Koczak sits three goals behind senior Ryan Smith (Roanoke, TX/Keller) for leading scorer.
Despite Koczak’s goal, it was fellow freshman Ryan Homoki (Grafton/Midview) who led the Berg offensively with five shots, three of which were on goal.
Smith collected two shots on goal against Capital. Smith has tallied 17 shots on goal, two assists and seven goals for the Student Princes in 2012.
Senior Cole Tonti (Columbus/St. Francis de Sales), junior Erik Furst (Columbus/Upper Arlington) and sophomore Hamid Shariff (Columbus/Centennial), all collected a shot against the Crusaders.
The Heidelberg defense had a stellar performance. Sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Stevens (South Lyon, MI) faced only one shot from Crusaders. Stevens 2012 season total now stands at 49 saves.
With the victory, the Heidelberg men move to 6-5-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the OAC.
The Heidelberg men’s soccer team returns to the pitch on Tuesday, October 9, when they travel to Berea, Ohio to take on Baldwin Wallace University. Following the women’s game that evening, the men’s game will also be broadcast on SportsTime Ohio at noon on Wednesday, October 10, 2012. Kickoff from Berea is slated for 6:30 p.m.
