The Student Princes intensely battled Defiance College for the entire first half but only took four shots until the 44:58 mark when the Berg men found their first and only goal of the contest. It was the foot of sophomore forward Chris Kozcak that put the Berg ahead with two seconds remaining in the first half. Koczak’s goal would stand for the remainder of the game, sending the Berg to a 1-0 victory over Defiance in Hidden Valley.
Koczak’s goal was set up by a pass from sophomore forward Kurt Wilhelm marking his first assist of the 2013 campaign. Koczak would finish the evening with four shots and two shots on goal which sends his goal total to three on the year.
His three goals puts him in a tie with freshman Greg Raimondo who netted a hat trick against Oberlin.
Junior forward Nico Samaneigo helped out the Berg offense against the Yellow Jackets with three shots of his own.
Senior defender Erik Furst was active offensively with two shots, one of which was on target. Juniors Tyler Eoff and Mitchell Papst along with sophomores Ryan Homoki and Kurt Wilhelm each tallied one shot against the Yellow Jackets.
Defiance had their best opportunity to bring the game to a tie in the 70th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick following a Berg foul in the box. Yellow Jacket midfielder Drew Metz struck a well-paced shot on goal but junior goalkeeper Matthew Stevens made a brilliant diving save to maintain the Heidelberg lead.
Stevens now has nine saves on the year with three of them coming against Defiance. He currently holds a save percentage of .750 in his junior campaign.
The Berg men will return to the pitch on Friday, September 13, when they travel to Delaware, Ohio to matchup against the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan University. The Berg will be playing in their first night game of the 2013 season as kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.
