Larry Baxter Scores First Collegiate Goal in Loss to Case Western Rerserve

TIFFIN, Ohio—Freshman midfielder Larry Baxter (Ashland) scored his first career goal, but the Heidelberg University men’s soccer team lost to Case Western Reserve University today, 6-1, in a non-conference match at Mayer Field in Tiffin, Ohio. Baxter is the sixth Student Prince to score a goal in just eight matches in 2011.

The win improves the Spartans to 7-1-0, while the loss drops the Berg to 2-4-2.

Baxter’s goal, scored in the 21st minute, was assisted by freshman midfielder Nicholas Samaniego (Huron). Four total goals were scored in the first half.

Case’s Vinny Bell and Eric Erb each scored two goals.

Junior two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference goalkeeper Ryan Smith (Roanoke, Texas/Keller) played all 90 minutes in the net, notching four saves. To date, Smith has recorded all 775 of the team’s minutes as keeper and has 30 stops for the season.

Despite the loss, the Berg held an 8-6 advantage in corner kicks.

The Student Princes next host Denison University on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at Mayer Field at 7 p.m. in their final non-conference match before entering Ohio Athletic Conference play at Capital University next Saturday.
