WILMINGTON, Ohio—The Heidelberg University men’s soccer team defeated St. Vincent (Pa.) College, 1-0, tonight at the Wilmington Kiwanis Classic at Charlie Gilhart Field in Wilmington, Ohio. Senior defender Joe Trejo (Tucson, Az./Sabino) scored the game-winning goal just six minutes into the match.
The win is the Student Princes’ first of the season and evens their record to 1-1-1. The loss drops St. Vincent to 0-4.
Freshman midfielder Hamid Shariff (Centennial) lofted a well-placed corner kick to Trejo, who headed the sixth-minute goal past Wilmington goalie Jake Gilbertson.
Hamid also scored a goal in yesterday’s game against Allegheny (Pa.) College.
Junior second-team All-OAC goaltender Ryan Smith (Roanoke, Texas/Keller) logged all 90 minutes between the pipes, making four saves. He now has 19 for the season.
Despite the lone score, both teams combined to take 40 shots, with Heidelberg holding a 25-15 advantage.
The Student Princes will have a week to prepare for play at the Kenyon College Tournament, where it will play Kenyon at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16 and take on The College of Wooster at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18 in Gambrills, Ohio.
