Koinis Medals and the Berg Takes Third

Pataskala, Ohio – September 15, 2009 – Paced by senior co-medalist Zack Koinis (Vermilion, Ohio / Vermilion) the Heidelberg University men’s golf team finished third at the 2009 Auld Kisor Classic co-hosted by Ohio Dominican University and Otterbein College at the Cumberland Trails Golf Course in Pataskala, Ohio Sept. 11-12.

Heidelberg fired a 900 (298, 296, 306) over the course of three rounds to finish in third behind Marian College’s 873 (296, 288, 289) and Humber College’s 874 (291, 290, 293). Cedarville University (311, 297, 302) and ODU (303, 297, 310) tied for fourth at 910 to round out the top-five. In the final standings, Heidelberg topped fellow Ohio Athletic Conference foes Otterbein and Capital University who finished seventh and 14th, respectively.

Koinis positioned himself atop the leader board with Humber’s Mark Hoffman following round one on Friday. He shot a four-under par 68 to share a three stroke lead in the competition. In round two, Koinis fired a 70 to hold onto sole possession of first. Koinis battled darkness at the end of round three and carded a 74 to tie with Hoffman with a 212. The win was the first for the year for Koinis and the fourth of his career.

Backing Koinis with top-25 finishes was Kevin Lenhart (Arlington, Ohio / Arlington) and David Lilly (Greencastle, Ind. / Greencastle) in a tie for 25th. Lenhart (77, 77, 76) and Lilly (76, 75, 79) shot a 230.

Zak Markley (Williamsville, N.Y. / Williamsville) and Sam Arnold (Springfield, Ohio / Kenton Ridge) rounded out the scoring for the Berg and stood tied for 45th and 51st, respectively. Markley opened with a 78 and returned with his lowest round at two over before closing out with an 83 for a 235. Arnold shot two 77’s with an 83 in round two to card a 237.
