Oberlin, Ohio – October 16, 2010 – In final preparation for the 2010 Ohio Athletic Conference Championships, the Heidelberg University men’s and women’s cross country teams took part in the Inter-Regional Rumble hosted by Oberlin College.
On the men’s side, Heidelberg finished in 18th with a final team score of 526. Taking home the championship was Allegheny College (66) followed by Elizabethtown College (130).
For the women, Heidelberg recorded a team score of 612. Case Western Reserve University won the team title after tallying a score of 83.
Leading the men’s team was the junior duo of Jordan Karnes (Edgerton, Ohio / Edgerton) and John Gogle (Sunbury, Ohio / Big Walnut). Karnes finished in 69th with a time of 26:29.5 and Gogle followed in 70th with a time of 26:30.0.
Sophomore Gareth Graver (Enon, Ohio / Greenon) and newcomer Drew Avsec (Geneva, Ohio / Geneva) were the next ’Berg runners to cross the finish line. Graver had a time of 27:07.4 and Avsec finished in 27:10.2.
Taking the lead for the women was sophomore Bobbi Custer (Woodstock, Ohio / Triad). Custer finished in 101st with a time of 24:27.3. Following Custer was freshmen Sophie Goobic (Canton, N.Y. / Hugh C. Williams) and Jocelyn Staugler (Coldwater, Ohio / Coldwater). Goobic finished in a time of 24:28.8, while Staugler clocked a 24:34.7.
After a week off, Heidelberg returns to action at the OAC Championships. Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio will host the championships Oct. 30 beginning at 11:00 a.m. The men’s team will look to defend its title, while the women are in search of its first championship.
