Total Team Effort Propels Men's Basketball to Win Over Houghton

NEWPORT NEWS, Virginia - Heidelberg University's men's basketball team rebounded from a loss on Friday to win the consolation game of the Holiday Inn Captains Shootout.  Each of the 12 Heidelberg players who played scored points in the 87-58 win over Houghton. 

Four points from Jackson Blue (West Chester/Lakota West) and 3-pointers from Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, PA/Harvest Prep) and Ishaam Smith Jr (Richmond Heights) helped the Student Princes sprint out to a 10-0 lead in the opening minutes of the contest.

Head coach Anthony Gholson, in his fifth season, watched his team push the first half lead to as many as 20 points.  Heidelberg (6-6) led 43-24 at hafltime. 

After the intermission, the Student Princes continued to pad their lead. 

Heidelberg shot 58.6% from the field and 45.5% from behind the arc.  Houghton (0-8) missed all nine of their 3-point shots. 

Givner led Heidelberg with 15 points, while Smith added 13. 

For the second straight game, Mike Petrie (Columbus/Beechcroft) reached double-figures off the bench.  Petrie finished with 10 points. 

Nate Davis (Dayton/Stivers) grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked four shots to go along with eight points. 

Doug Waldmannstetter (Oregon/Clay) finished with nine points and nine rebounds. 

Conner Kohls (Columbus Grove) and MJ Lotko (Elyria) each scored their first collegiate points during the victory.  Kohls hit a 3-pointer and Lotko drained a pair of free throws. 

Heidelberg returns home to host Muskingum University on January 5. Gametime is 3 p.m.
