TIFFIN, Ohio—The Heidelberg University men’s basketball team will end its 11-day layoff when it plays two games at The College of Wooster’s “Mose” Hole/Kiwanis Classic on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 29-30 at Timken Gymnasium in Wooster, Ohio. The Student Princes will face Hiram College on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and take on Wooster on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The Student Princes (3-6, 1-3 Ohio Athletic Conference) have won two of their last three games and last played on Dec. 17, an 86-76 loss to Trine (Ind.) University in Tiffin. In that game, junior second-team All-Ohio Athletic Conference guard Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Harvest Prep) poured in a team-high 20 points on a six-of-12 shooting performance, sophomore forward Victor Fortkamp (St. Henry) added 12 points and seven rebounds and junior honorable mention forward Nate Davis (Dayton/Stivers) had a monstrous slam dunk that was featured on ESPN’s Sports Center’s top-10 plays of the weekend.
Through nine games this season, senior guard Darion Capers (Clayton/Trotwood-Madison) leads the team in scoring at 13.7 points per game and is a 52.4 percent (43-of-82) shooter. Fortkamp averages 11.8 ppg., is second with 5.2 rebounds per game, shoots 55.7 percent (39-of-70) from the field and leads the team with a 79.4 (27-of-34) free throw percentage. Givner scores 11.4 ppg., pulls down 5.1 rpg. and leads the team with 26 assists and 10 steals. Davis averages close to a double-double with 9.2 ppg. and 9.2 rpg., shoots 56.9 percent (33-of-58) from the field and leads the team with 21 blocks and 10 steals. Sophomore guard Mike Petrie (Columbus/Beechcroft) will round out the starting five. Petrie averages 6.3 ppg. and has canned a team-high 11 three-pointers.
The Student Princes average 72.4 ppg., 40.6 rpg. and shoot 44.4 percent (230-of-518) from the field collectively.
Hiram (6-3, 1-1 North Coast Athletic Contest) is riding a four-game winning streak and has four players who average double figures, led by Jamaal Watkins’ 17.3 ppg. Watkins (8.0 rpg.) and Andrew Wiegand (14.6 ppg., 8.4 rpg.) are the Terriers’ leading rebounders.
The Fighting Scots (7-2, 1-2 NCAC) have won two straight contests and are led by Xavier Brown and Justin Hallowell with 15.6 ppg. and 10.7 ppg., respectively.
The Berg’s two games at the “Mose” Hole/Kiwanis Classic will close non-conference play for the 2011-12 season. Heidelberg will open 2012 by hosting OAC rival Ohio Northern University on Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 7:30 p.m.
