Tiffin, Ohio – February 17, 2010 – The Heidelberg University men’s basketball team had four players record double figures, but it was not enough to overcome 15 made three-pointers by John Carroll University in a 95-91 Ohio Athletic Conference setback tonight in Seiberling Gymnasium.
John Carroll connected on 15-of-29 (.517) from long range compared to a 6-of-15 showing by the Berg to post the win.
The loss drops Heidelberg to 12-12 overall and 8-9 in league action, while John Carroll improves to 18-5 and 14-5.
In the first half, Heidelberg came out of the gates strong and built 13-point lead, 35-22, with just over five minutes left in the half. Assisting in the first half lead was nine points from Josh Calver (Shelby, Ohio / Shelby) and three high flying dunks, two courtesy of Nate Davis (Dayton, Ohio / Stivers) and one by Adrian Casey Jr. (Lorain, Ohio / Admiral King).
Once its deficit hit 13, JCU answered with a trey pointer from Chris Zacjac and went on to outscore the Berg 21-5 over the final 5:32 of the half to hold a 43-40 lead at the break.
Davis connected on two free throws at the 18:20 mark of the second half to give Heidelberg the lead, 44-43. Heidelberg pushed its lead to five, 54-49, with 15:23 on the clock following a Casey layup. However, JCU responded with an 8-0 run to take over the scoreboard for good.
Heidelberg pulled within one point on multiple occasions, but could not streak past JCU for the win.
For the game, Heidelberg shot 55.7 percent (34-of-61) from the field compared to a 44.1 clip (30-of-68) by the Blue Streaks. The Berg held a 38-35 advantage on the glass.
Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Harvest Preparatory) and Calver led the Berg with 19 points apiece. Adding 10 points was Travis Kinn (Alvada, Ohio / New Riegel) and Casey came off the bench and finished with 10 as well.
Davis hauled in a team-best nine boards followed by Givner with seven.
For John Carroll, Joey Meyer came off the bench to lead the way with 15 points. Maurice Haynes finished with a team-leading nine rebounds.
