Men's Basketball Falls to Mount Union, 89-75 on Alumni Day

Box Score | Season Stats

It was a special day in Seiberling Gymnasium when the Heidelberg University men’s basketball team took on the Purple Raiders of Mount Union. Former Heidelberg basketball players spanning seven decades were in attendance for Alumni Day and the H.A.L.L. Award ceremony.

This year, Bill Groman ’58 and Paul Baetz ’59 were the H.A.L.L. Award recipients.  Despite the Berg losing 89-75 to the Purple Raiders, the day was a success.

Offensively, the Berg was led by seniors Nate Davis (Dayton/Stivers) and Dane Givner (Pittsburgh, PA./Harvest Prep) who tallied 21 and 14 points respectively. They were the only Heidelberg players to reach double figures scoring.

Davis collected a team-high nine rebounds, two steals and one block, while shooting five of seven from the free throw line.

Givner led the team with four steals and four assists, while grabbing three rebounds in the loss.

Senior Quintin Aden Jr. (Canal Winchester/Harvest Prep) and freshman Jackson Blue (West Chester/Lakota West) both dropped nine points for the Berg against Mount Union.

Mount Union finished with four Purple Raiders in double figures, including Taylor Moore, who finished with 20 points off of the bench.

The Student Princes jumped out to an early four-point lead at the 18:19 mark with an Ishaam Smith Jr. (Richmond Heights) three-pointer, but the Purple Raiders quickly tied the game at the 16:53 mark in the first half.

After a Keith Mackie (Detroit, MI./Fr. Gabriel Richard) three-pointer that tied the game, Mount Union took a two-point lead with a Moore layup, and did not trail for the remained of the game.

The Purple Raiders took their largest lead of the game (21) with 16:39 left in the game. The Berg attempted to diminish the Mount Union advantage, but it was too little, too late.

With 2:09 left on the clock, the Berg managed to cut the deficit to eight, but a six point Mount Union run would leave the Berg down 14 with under a minute to play.

With the loss, the Heidelberg men move to 9-8 on the year, 4-6 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

Mount Union moves to 7-10, 5-5 in the OAC.

The Heidelberg men’s basketball team will return to the hardwood on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 when they travel to Bexley, Ohio and the campus of Capital University. Tip-off between the Berg and the Crusaders is slated for 7:30 p.m.
