Eight Selected to All-Ohio Team

TIFFIN, Ohio —  Eight members of the Heidelberg University football team were named to the 2012 OhioCollegeFootball.com All-Ohio D-III Team on Monday.

Running back Cartel Brooks (Kokomo, IN/Galion), left tackle Quentin Rembert (Euclid) and linebacker Craig Sykes (Centerburg) were all named to the First Team.

Despite being slowed by injuries late in the season, Brooks led the Ohio Athletic Conference in rushing with 1,299 yards and 16 touchdowns.  Brooks set a Heidelberg record with a 99-yard touchdown rush against Wilmington.

Rembert anchored an offensive line which blocked for an offense which set a new record for total offense (5,178 yards).  Rembert's line paved the way for 232 yards per game on the ground and only allowed six sacks in 233 dropbacks.

Sykes, a finalist for the Gagliardi Trophy, led Heidelberg with 87 tackles.  Having served as the defensive play-caller for all four seasons, he led a vastly improved unit that yielded a paltry 16.9 points per game.

Four Student Princes were selected to the Second Team.

Receiver C.J. Powell (Detroit, MI/Bishop Foley) caught 56 passes for 852 yards and six touchdowns.  He also averaged 9.8 yards per punt return, highlighted by a 67-yard return for a touchdown against Marietta.  Following the season, Powell participated in the Aztec Bowl.

Nose guard Ben Poirier (Canton, MI) had a team-high 11.5 sacks and 23 tackles for loss.  Linebacker Dawson Gore (Bellevue) had 70 tackles, including eight tackles for loss.  Safety Justin Suddeth (Warren/Howland) led the Student Princes with four interceptions.

Defensive end Stephen Fejedelem (Ravenna) was selected to the Third Team.  Fejedelem had 10 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks.

Heidelberg finished the 2012 season 9-2 and made their first postseason appearance since 1972.
