Four of the first five games of the 2013 Heidelberg University football schedule will be at home as the Student Princes look to build off of a successful 2012 campaign.
Heidelberg hosts Alma College for the season opener on September 7 at 1:30 p.m. The meeting will be the fourth straight season-opening clash between the schools. The Student Princes have won all three previous matchups, including a 34-28 overtime win in Tiffin in 2011.
After a bye week, Heidelberg welcomes Ohio Northern to Mayer Field for a 2 p.m. clash on September 21. The meeting with the Polar Bears also marks Fellows Day and the third annual Bendekovic Bowl. The “Bendo Bowl” is played in honor of the late Ronnie and Jason Bendekovic, brothers who were assistant coaches for ONU and Heidelberg at the time of their passing.
On September 28, the Fighting Quakers of Wilmington College trek to Tiffin for a 1:30 p.m. matchup on Parents Day. The Quakers are one of five OAC teams with a new head coach for the 2013 season.
Seventh-year head coach Mike Hallett and his team will pack up the buses and head to Marietta for the first road contest of the season on October 5. The game against the Pioneers features a 7 p.m. start, the Berg’s first night contest since week two in 2011.
Homecoming festivities will be held on October 12, as Heidelberg plays host to Capital University. The battle with the Crusaders will begin at 1:30 p.m.
The second half of the season begins in Westerville on October 19. The 23rd annual Rhine River Classic with Otterbein will kick off at 7 p.m. Last season, Heidelberg knocked off Otterbein 21-0 in Tiffin.
Muskingum will host Heidelberg for a 1:30 p.m. contest on October 26. On their last trip to New Concord, the Student Princes knocked an upstart Muskie squad from the ranks of the unbeaten.
Heidelberg’s final regular season home game will take place on November 2 against Mount Union. Before and after the game, the team will honor its seniors for their contributions to the program. Kickoff with the Purple Raiders is slated for 1:30 p.m.
The Student Princes close out the regular season with two road contests in the Cleveland area. First is a 1:30 p.m. encounter at John Carroll on November 9.
After the game against the Blue Streaks, Heidelberg will face Baldwin Wallace in Berea on November 16. The contest with the Yellow Jackets is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
When the season begins, Hallett's crew will sport a new look at home and on the road. The new jersies, manufactured by Nike, feature distinctive orange numerals with "Heidelberg" stitched across the chest.
Every game will be broadcast on WTTF AM-1600. Video of each home game will be streamed live online, free of charge.
The Student Princes set several school records en route to a 9-2 record in 2012, which resulted in Heidelberg’s first postseason berth since 1972. The team will return eight starters on offense, seven on defense and two on special teams.
