‘Berg Football Receiving Points in National Polls

TIFFIN, Ohio—The Heidelberg University football team is receiving five points in both the American Football Coaches Association and D3Football.com top-25 polls. The Berg received points in the AFCA poll of Oct. 10, but did not receive mention since.

Following its second three-game winning streak of 2011, the Student Princes garnered points in both polls for the first time in 2011.

Heidelberg, under the direction of fifth-year head coach Mike Hallett, enters the final week of the regular season 7-2 overall and 6-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Last Saturday’s 41-28 win at John Carroll University secured the program’s best record since 1994—its last winning season—when it went 7-3 under Dick West. A win in this Saturday’s game against Ohio Northern University (1:30 p.m.) will match the 8-2 mark set by the 1993 team.

Hallett, who is 24-25 at Heidelberg, inherited a program that was 1-39 during the four seasons prior to his arrival.

The Berg and Baldwin-Wallace College sit in a tie for second place in the league standings going into the final week of play. A Student Prince win and a Yellow Jacket loss against JCU will give Heidelberg sole possession of second place to close the regular season.

Saturday’s game marks the last for Student Prince seniors. Members of the senior class are looking to round out their careers with a four-year record of 21-19, which would be the best four-year mark since the class of ’95 went 24-14-2 from 1991-94.

Heidelberg closes the 2011 regular season Saturday, Nov. 12 when its hosts ONU (6-3, 5-3 OAC) at Mayer Field in Tiffin, Ohio at 1:30 p.m.
