Tiffin, Ohio – September 18, 2010 - The Heidelberg University football team outscored Baldwin-Wallace College 20-14 in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome a 21-point first half deficit. In the end, the Berg fell by a score of 35-20. This loss evens Heidelberg’s overall record to 1-1, while opening up at 0-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Baldwin-Wallace improves to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the OAC.
In the second half, Heidelberg freshman Germany Woods (Cleveland, Ohio / Saint Edward) put the Berg on the scoreboard with an 11-yard run. Senior place kicker Jessie Hawkins (Georgetown, Ky. / Scott County) connected for the extra point.
In the fourth quarter senior quarterback Andrew Miller (Dalton, Ohio / Dalton) snuck one in from one yard out to continue Heidelberg’s late scoring. Hawkins connected on the point after to make the score 21-14 B-W. After another B-W score, senior wide receiver Mike Preston (Euclid, Ohio / Euclid) answered with a 16-yard TD pass from Miller. A failed point after kept the final score at 35-20.
The Yellow Jackets scored on their opening drive off a one -yard rush by Tim Maker. Again in the first quarter, Ryan Kish of Baldwin-Wallace recovered a fumble and returned it for a 23-yard touchdown. B-W extended its lead to 21-0 after quarterback Ryan O’Rourke completed a 33-yard pass to Aaron Manders.
Baldwin-Wallace held a 325-285 advantage in total yards. The Yellow Jackets gained 285 yards on the ground, while Heidelberg had 114. Roles were reversed in the air with the Berg picking up 171 yards and holding B-W to 40.
Offensively, sophomore Brad Jones (Lorain, Ohio / Lorain Southview) led the team with 48 yards rushing on 11 attempts. Woods picked up 160 all-purpose yards highlighted by 127 kick return yards. On the receiving end, Preston had 125 yards on seven receptions. Mario Walton (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria) registered 21 yards on four catches and Chance Ferrell (Garfield Hts., Ohio / Garfield Hts.) had one catch for 19 yards.
On the defensive end, Andy Fadenholz (Grafton, Ohio/ Keystone) and Craig Sykes (Centerburg, Ohio / Centerburg) led the team in tackles with 10 apiece. Sykes also had one sack for a loss of 12 yards and had two tackles for a loss of 13 yards. Following was senior Vaughn Klein (Galloway, Ohio / Central Crossing) with nine tackles and Delvon Graham (Garfield Hts., Ohio / Garfield Hts.) with seven. Graham also had two tackles for a loss of eight yards.
Heidelberg will return to action next Saturday, September 25, against Otterbein University in a Battle for the Rhine River Cup. Kick-off is set for 1:30 p.m. at Mayer Field.
