ADRIAN, Mich. - For a game that was originally scheduled for Tuesday, the Adrian College Bulldogs were certainly ready to go. The Bulldogs scored all eight of their runs in the first three innings en route to an 8-1 win over Heidelberg University on Friday.
Heidelberg, ranked 14th by the American Baseball Coaches Association only managed five hits on a frigid day.
Adrian (4-4) scored three runs in the first inning off of Heidelberg starter Alex Zander (Brooklyn Heights/Cuyahoga Heights). The Bulldogs pieced three hits and two walks together to take the lead. They would add a run in the second.
Heidelberg (10-4) scored their run in the third. Joe Staab (Bellville/Clear Fork) reached on an error and stole second. T.J. Harkness (Fremont/Ross) walked before Alex Grove (Canal Fulton/Canton Central Catholic) hit an RBI ground-rule double to right. Eric Monroe (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) was hit by a pitch before Adrian used a 5-4-3 double play to limit the damage.
Adrian piled on four more runs in the third off of reliever Teddy Lowe (Fort Wayne, IN/Carroll). A triple, double and two singles contributed to the runs.
After the third, neither team scored. Steve Huber (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) and Danny Kilger (Novi, MI) combined for 5.1 innings of scoreless relief for Heidelberg. Huber, who threw 2.1 innings, allowed just one hit in his collegiate debut.
The Student Princes return to action on Saturday. They will host Case Western Reserve for a three-game weekend series at Peaceful Valley. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.
