SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - In a season of ups and downs, Heidelberg University baseball's game at Wittenberg only seemed fitting. The Student Princes fell behind, rallied, then collapsed late in a 10-5 loss on Tuesday.
Heidelberg (19-18) trailed 3-0 before tying the contest in the sixth. After being hit by a pitch and moving to second on a wild pitch, Steve Morse (Scottsdale, AZ/Orchard Lake St. Mary's, MI) scored when Alex Grove (Canal Fulton/Canton Central Catholic) reached on a Tiger error. A triple by Derek Hug (Bryan), his third of the season, chased home Grove. A fielder's choice off the bat of Andrew Zenczak (Brunswick) allowed Hug to score.
'Berg starter Ryan Minteer (Venetia, PA/Peters Township) allowed a run in the bottom of the inning to put Wittenberg back in front. Minteer allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits in 5.2 innings.
Heidelberg countered with a run in the seventh. A basehit by Eric Monroe (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) plated Joe Staab (Bellville/Clear Fork), tying the game at four.
In the eighth, the Student Princes took their first lead of the game. Zenczak doubled down the right field line to score Hug.
With a 5-4 lead, the 'Berg imploded in the bottom of the eighth. The Tigers scored six runs in the frame, all with two outs. Only one of the runs was earned.
Ben Sniezek (Dearborn Heights, MI/Crestwood) took the loss, falling to 0-2.
The Student Princes play their final non-conference game of the year on Wednesday. Head coach Matt Palm's team travels to his alma mater, the College of Wooster, for a single game, starting at 4 p.m.
