New partnerships with local institutions are enabling qualified American Junior Year students to take part in internships during their studies at the University of Heidelberg.
Prior to their departure from the U.S., AJY students are informed about internship opportunities. They apply for a particular internship by the start of their semester in Heidelberg. Academic qualifications and relevance to a student’s academic and professional goals are the primary selection criteria. Students are assigned to work with a supervisor at a hosting institution. They spend approximately 8 hours a week at that institution and write a term paper relating to their internship experience enabling them to earn 3 semester hours of credit.
International Office, Universität Heidelberg
Student will work eight hours per week in the International Office in the main Administration Building of Universität Heidelberg. He/she will be involved in the daily management of a major university office in charge of more than 5000 international students.
This internship is ideal for a student who is majoring in International Studies, Languages, Business Administration, or who might be contemplating a career in study abroad or in higher education administration.
The Barmer GEK Insurance Company
AJY interns are invited to participate in a weekly program of instruction alongside German Barmer young professionals at the regional center of the Barmer Insurance Company in Mannheim. Barmer is Germany’s largest health insurance provider. Students learn not only about health insurance but also about the broad range of social insurance services available in Germany. This internship is available during the Spring semester ONLY.
Friedrich-Ebert Memorial Archives
The AJY intern working in the Friedrich-Ebert Gedenkstätte in Heidelberg has the opportunity to do archival research for publications, prepare exhibitions, and participate in public events of this small museum focused on the life and times of Germany’s first Reichtagspräsident, Friedrich Ebert. The focus of the work of the Gedenkstätte is the period of the Weimar Republic—after World War I and prior to the assumption of power by the Nazis in 1933. The Gedenkstätte is located in a building which was Ebert’s birthplace in the old city of Heidelberg.
The German-American Institute (DAI) in Heidelberg
AJY interns at the Deutsch-Amerikanisches Institut (DAI) assist patrons in the library and take part in lectures, seminars, discussion groups, and cultural events. Furthermore, AJY students also have the opportunity to work with bilingual children at DAI’s International Kindergarten.
University Archives, Universität Heidelberg
Student will work 8 hours per week in the University Archives of Universität Heidelberg. Student will learn about the maintenance (special storage and preservation) of old legal university documents, such as charters, registers and other materials dating back to the foundation of Universität Heidelberg in 1386. In addition, student will be involved in the daily business of the archives, which includes staffing the information desk and the reading room.
This internship is ideal for a student who is majoring in history and might be contemplating a career in archival or library science.
Alumni International, Universität Heidelberg
Student will be involved in the daily management of a major university office and in project development such as International Alumni Club. Furthermore, student will be working with alumni network and planning alumni events.
The internship at Alumni International is ideal for a student who is majoring in International Studies, Business Administration or Languages and who might be planning a career in study abroad, in an international office or in higher education administration.
In the challenging academic environment of the Hölderlin Gymnasium in the Heidelberg Altstadt, AJY interns work as assistant teachers. Teaching English language and sharing information about life in the United States requires thorough preparation and an effective command of teaching methods. Students are rewarded by the insights they gain into the German school system.
Ballschule of the Universität Heidelberg
An AJY intern works with the director of the Ballschule on various public relations tasks (power point presentations, website) and assists staff/coaches with practical implementation of the Ballschule in local schools. This internship is ideal for students interested in public relations, sports management, physical education, or early childhood development.
An AJY intern works with elementary school children in the first to fourth grades, planning activities which assist the pupils in learning the basics of English in a playful pedagogical setting. AJY interns also help with homework and participate in school functions such as field trips.
Brewery "Klosterhof" - Neuburg Monastery Heidelberg
