Watershed and hydrologic modeling, Watershed hydrology and management, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) resource applications, Runoff and sediment transport processes, Nitrogen and Phosphorus movement, Pareto optimization, Automatic parameter estimation, Soil-water-plant relationships, Solid waste management/Composting.
I use watershed modeling to explore the effects of agricultural practices (e.g., tillage, nutrient management, crop cover) and climate change on nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment exports from Lake Erie watersheds. These objectives can be done by creating different scenarios of tillage (conventional vs. no-till), fertilizer application (broadcast vs. incorporated) and timing, climate inputs (extreme dry and wet conditions). We use Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to model the Rock Creek, Honey Creek, Sandusky, and Maumee watersheds under the above different scenarios. Simulation results may aid farmers, policymakers, and stakeholders make informed decisions about agricultural practices that will help decrease dissolved P exports from these Lake Erie watersheds.
